I lived in Oak Park back in the mid 70s, and my mom lived there for some years after I moved in with my dad. I remember one winter my brother and I visited when O’Hare was closed for three days due to snow. And I remember wind chill factors of -60F or worse . But never air temps that low. It’s crazy.

The all time record in Chicago is - 27, set in 1985, which I do remember. So this is pretty close.
We got a lot of snow in the late 70s - but it wasn’t bitterly cold that much.
And they changed the way they measure wind chill some years ago - that - 60 would probably be - 30 or something today.

That three-day closure would have been 77 or 78. My mom lived way the hell out in Sa ndwich. We spent the night at ORD, then drove back to Sandwich the next day. Slowly.

Yup, me in a nutshell.
My car is so filthy, I’d be happy just to power wash it off this Sunday.

Where I am in Missouri, it was 15 yesterday and it’ll be 65 by Sunday. The Midwest is truly amazing

Yeah- we got blasted from 77-79, though the worst blizzard in that time frame was January of ‘79. That’s the one that vaulted Jane Byrne into the Mayor’s office.

That may have been the one. My brother and I usually flew to visit from 12/26 to about 1/2.
